Eagle-Human – “In the beginning of time Atquntam constructed an abalone-shell covered post which reached from Nusmata to Attwolsqamus, a mountain near the Kimsquit River, not far from its mouth. To this place came from above , Smaoan, “The First One.” He flew down as an eagle but declined to assume human form immediately and began to travel. In accordance with Atquntam’s instruction, Smaoan planned to make a circuit of the world seeking a suitable place to settle. He started northward, in eagle form, scattering eagle down, wherefore this material has ever since been highly regarded and is used as a symbol of peace… Sometimes as he traveled he assumed the form of the sun, for he was so powerful that nothing was impossible to him.” (McIlwraith)
